รูปประโยคของ Past Perfect Tense นี้ ไม่ว่าประธานจะเป็นเอกพจน์ หรือพหูพจน์จะต้องใช้กริยาช่วย had กับกริยาช่องที่ 3 เสมอ เช่น

หลักการใช้
1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดลงแล้วในอดีตเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นก่อน
อีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่ง
เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน ใช้ Past Perfect
เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นหลัง ใช้ Past Simple
และมักจะเชื่อมด้วยคำว่า when , before , after , until , as soon as , เช่น
- He had written to her four times when he got her reply.
(ใช้ past perfect เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นว่าเขาเขียนถึงเธอ 4 ครั้ง ก่อนที่เขาได้รับคำตอบจากเธอ)
2. ใช้กับคำว่า by the time
By the time + Past simple , Past Perfect
- By the time the sun set , we had left school.
- By the time the children went to bed , they had already finished their homework.
3. ใช้หลังคำว่า that ในประโยค Indirect Speech ซึ่งเปลี่ยนมาจากประโยค Direct Speech เช่น
- He told me that they had left about an hour before.
- They said that they had done the report.
4. ใช้กับ no sooner ................than... (ทันทีที่..........ก็....)
Hardly ....................when ....(ทันทีที่..........ก็....)
Scarcely ............when .......(ทันทีที่..........ก็....)

- They had no sooner finished their work than they went out.
